You may also need to consider how you'll surround your patio. What sort of edging do you want? Will the end of your patio rest above or below any soiled area - and if so what will be planted in these areas? If your garden is on a slope will a retaining wall be required and will more than one patio level be required. If you intend to have more than one patio area will your need paving to connect one to the other?
Our local experts can discuss a number of options with you. Clearly, everyone needs to be mindful of budgets but a good start point is to scope out your ideal patio layout and then we can set about understanding what the potential costs will be. Then we can understand what may or not be possible based on budget, which may or may not influence the choice of possible materials which could be used to complete your patio project.
An outdoor patio area, or areas leading from one section of a garden to another can really set the form as well as specify the layout and also flow of your back yard. Whatever of the size of your garden, a small paved section is a must have for a lot of gardens. It creates a strong base for tables and also chairs as well as therefore provides an obvious outside social area.Like many aspects of your garden you will certainly have a number options for your
outdoor patio in Leeds and also paving connections and locations. However, this element of your garden can potentially provide the broadest choice of colours, designs, materials, appearances and also sizes.
As with all our services, our

your goals for your back yard project. Our landscaping know-how allows us to suggest forms as well as designs for your patio area. Contours, circular areas or a winding path can offer a distinct look set into a
garden wall can look stunning.
Whilst a critical focal point for many landscaping projects is a patio area the skills of our team mean that we are able to provide a complete landscape service. As well as patios and pathways our groundwork skills are perfect for setting an excellent base before installing artificial grass.
Many clients are undecided on whether to go for a paved patio or a decking area. Choices can come down to budget and practicality of your existing garden slope and shape. In actual fact we have done a number of landscaping projects where both a stone patio and a decking area have been installed in different garden locations. However, if you have a steep sloping garden then a raised garden decking platform allows a flat entertaining area to be constructed without the need for ground excavation and this can mean significant savings. Whether you choose timber or composite decking we can install matching garden fencing for a fully co-ordinated look including composite fencing for a low maintenance garden.
Porcelain paving comes in a wide variety of colour choices, shapes and sizes. You'd be hard pressed to find a style which doesn't appeal to you and in creasing popular as far as Leeds Patios are concerned. As well as the obvious square or rectangular shapes they are also available in plank styles too. Across the different types of paving slabs you will come across a many subtle shade differences with most focussing on variations of grey - from almost white to black. You will also be able to find that there is a reasonably large range of buff shades but that also designs have also been incorporated into some paving slabs or an aging, almost metallic, effect has been integrated into the design.
With such a range, porcelain paving does provide the breadth of designs to go for a very modern, contemporary style but there are also options which will work vey well if you have an older property and are wanting a more traditional cottage look too.
It's also work thinking about the edge of your patio. Choosing a different colour to effectively frame, or border your patio it can give it another dimension and bring out your main paving slabs in more dramatic fashion.
Now that block paving has grown so much in popularity there a a number of block paving options. Firstly let's discuss the material which will either be concrete or clay blocks - or stone imports. Both traditional blocks provide robust surfaces although clay is somewhat tougher making it hard to cut which will add to installation costs. The advantages of cement as a materials will therefore be cost, although there will be a spread of these based on size, shape and colour however, they will be more prone to fading than clay, which will however, be much more limited in colour options. Clay is also a little more prone to to moss growth due to being slightly more permeable than concrete, which therefore provide better drainage. This difference also means that cement block paving is more resistant to spills and stains which is why it is a good choice for driveways. Regarding stone blocks, these could primarily be made up from granite or a sandstone quartz. They are typically reconstituted stone (or engineered stone) meaning that they have be formed using natural stone crushed and then bound together with a resin to form a block this allows them to be made uniformly and provide another material choice.
The amount of colour and shape options for cement block paving is huge however, the most popular are shades of red, blue/black and more recently grey. The beauty of block paving is that you can alternate two or more single colour bricks quite easily or opt for a style commonly referred to as brindle block, which is a single brick which has a blend of colours within it.
Clearly colour will be a personal choice but it is important to look at the existing surroundings and if going for a slightly bolder red or yellow option, using a darker block to edge or border your paving can help it blend into its surroundings a little better.
Regarding shapes, this too will come down to personal choice so as well as the standard rectangular or square block shapes such as S-blocks and W-blocks, hexagonal, axe head shaped. However, they are generally associated with commercial premises or public walkways such as town centres as they become more pedestrianised and they can be ordered in very large quantities in one go.
As well as a number of variations in the colours the edging can also vary for Indian Stone Paving. This will depend on how the stone has been cut. If a saw has been used then you will have neat consistent edges and thickness of your paving slabs, hand cut slabs on the other hand will have much more variance in thickness and edges will be rougher. These hand cut Indian stones work exceptionally well if you are aiming for a old style cottage, rustic look.
As mentioned Indian stone has also grown in popularity for use in driveways. However, if you are looking to have a consistent Indian stone finish from the front to back of your house with a pathway connecting the two you need to ensure that your paving or driveways contractor is not using the exact same Indian paving stones for both your path and patio as well as your driveway.
Indian Stone driveway slabs should be thicker to take the additional weight, movement and more general wear and tear than that on a typical patio. Whilst you could chose to have all areas paved with driveway grade Indian stone, as it is a thicker slab it will be more expensive so this will add to your overall costs and is unlikely to be required - so could be said to be 'over specified' if use for pathways and patios. Clearly it will perform exceptionally well but if you are working to a budget this is worth knowing.
As well as options in thickness and edges the most visual aspect will be the colour options. Some of the good quality trade suppliers will have a range of off white shades, sandstone and darker buff shades to choose from. This will also include stabs which are distinctly a single tone and those which exhibit a couple. However, what is quite popular is to have a mix of several colours and sizes to provide a unique and interesting patio finish.
Granite is a natural paving material and is very hard wearing. Traditionally it has been used for many years to provide a form of cobbled paving and due to it's hard wearing attributes is often used as a driveway surface. For driveways smaller brick or cobbled paving stones are use as a block paving. However, granite paving is now available in many more shapes, sizes and finishes and due to it's hardwearing scratch resistant and non-slip surface , it is superbly suited for patios and pathways.
As stones and slabs are cut from natural granite deposits, rather than man made, this will mean that there will be unique subtle variances from one stone to another. It is often this non-uniform characteristics which make it so popular for many garden styles. It provides a rugged natural look and colours can vary amongst shades of greys, blacks, roses and yellows. With larger slabs, following additional flame finishing which aids it's slip resistant quality and also brings out the mineral deposits that can catch the sunlight and provide a subtle sparkle finish.
Whilst marble paving tiles have traditionally been associated with table tops, work surfaces and indoor floor tiling it is also versatile enough for outdoor use and can provide stunning patio areas. It is probably seen as one of the more luxurious paving options and indeed is one of the more expensive paving slabs but it can be well worth the investment.
Marble is a form of limestone, a metamorphic rock formed from recrystalised carbonate minerals - it naturally created following extreme pressure and temperature making it very durable, high quality material. as a natural material other minerals, sometimes referred to as impurities, will also be formed within the rock. It is these which create the additional different coloured veins and swirls that provide a 'marbled effect'.
The cutting and finishing means that both rough and smooth polished surfaces can be created from marble giving you a number of options for your marble paving project.
Slate Paving is another naturally formed stone, which can be cut to provide a hard-wearing paving ideal for paths and patios, as well as for roofing in the form of roof tiles.
Similar to some of the other natural stones it is a metamorphic rock meaning that it has been formed over many, many years through the application of heat and pressure. The basic ingredients for slate are shale which itself is muddy clay, with sand and volcanic dust - other additional minerals provide additional variations in colour and density. The pressure and heat transforms this into slate but it has a subtle layering, sometimes referred to as strata within in. Slate mines can still be found in the UK in North Wales, Cumbria and Cornwall.
Limestone is another naturally occurring stone and as with most of the others is formed over many years by being subjected to heat and pressure. It is known as a sedimentary rock which means its basis was the sediment accumulated at the bottom of shallow marine waters. The main mineral ingredient of limestone is calcite, which itself is created from a mix of microscopic organisms and small creatures with skeletons and shells.
It is hardwearing and long lasting and naturally provides a great non-slip surface when wet due to its textured surface finish, yet is quick drying too. It is less porous than sandstone paving slabs which means it is more durable. This difference is also noticeable in its finish. Limestone will feel smoother compared to the more textured finish of sandstone, so this will come down to personal preference of what sort of surface finish you are after.
Need help?
The brief reply to the question is yes. However, if you are thinking of repainting your outdoor patio rather than replacing it you truly ought to not try to do this on a tight budget - which may seem counterintuitive but it will be counterproductive.
Top-quality acrylic based paints would certainly be best. However, you must understand that to provide resilience these paints will certainly require to be applied heavily and also in numerous coats with a brush or roller. Also, they should be allowed to completely dry normally for a couple of days, so please inspect the forecast prior to starting this course of action. These paints are often designed for warehouses for marking safety routes so the colour options may also be a little unnatural for a garden environment.
With a painted patio - remember this is just a layer and will undergo table and chair bumps and scrapes. It may give a band-aid approach to boosting the look of your patio for a little while but once the paint starts to chip away attempting to overpaint once more will certainly not look great!
Of course, you can simply lay a paving piece on any surface area however you need to think about what will be completed effect. If you just intended to use a few slabs simply as a stepping rock then with a little sand and a little work with a spade you could level the ground to place a paver that can be stepped on without wobbling for a while. However, if you are intending on utilising chairs, tables, bar-b-ques you really should set your paving slabs into an effectively-prepared sub-base, which will certainly provide a strong, flat base for your pavers to then be fixed onto a mortar base. This will prevent weeds from showing up via paving joints and also ensure you do not have loose or unsteady paving stones.
Clearly, an installer who only does one of these will persuade you down that particular path. However, there are some scenarios where one may have the edge over the other. One of the main ones being the budget you are working with.
As a quick comparison - especially against wooden decking a patio made up from any of the slab options we have covered will be stronger, and as a result, last longer and require less maintenance. However, if you want to have a large single level social area and have a garden on a steep slope decking will offer a more cost-effective solution. The decking can be laid on a frame, which can simply be build up from the lower end of the slope. To do the same for a paved patio will require much more death moval and supporting walls to be constructed so will be more costly.
Yes - certain types of paving can also be used for a driveway so you can have consistent paving from the front of your house down the sides and to your back garden patio.
Not all pavers will be suitable but granite setts and driveway grade Indian stone would be perfectly good choices for this.
Clearly, this will depend on how dirty your patio is and whether or not staining has taken place.
For regular quick and easy cleaning simply mixing a cup of washing up liquid in a bucket of warm water and brushing this across your patio with a firm bristled brush is suitable for all types of pavers.
Pressure washing can be used for most pavers but this can remove sealers - although thoroughly cleaning this way will be good preparation for re-sealing when dry. with a pressure washer you should be more careful near the joints as high pressure can damage and dislodge jointing. If this does happen it is best to apply some jointing compound to prevent this from becoming an area for weed and algae growth. There are many options on the market, many of which can simply be brushed into the gaps so no DIY skills requried.
Absolutely. If fact a large proportion of our patios will have a different size and different type of brick or slabs for the edging of a patio. Block paving is a very poplar way to frame a patio.
